There are some fairy tales that feel as though they were made for winter.
East of the Sun and West of the Moon is one of them.
A young woman is taken away by a mysterious white bear and begins a journey that will take her across the world — east of the sun and west of the moon — to find him again.
I didn't want to paint the moment of the journey.
I wanted to paint the moment before.
The quiet of the forest.
The snow falling around them.
A girl asleep in the arms of the creature she loves, not yet knowing that everything is about to change.
Winter Dreams is my interpretation of that moment: a little piece of stillness before the fairy tale begins.
This painting was created using handmade watercolors and ink on Arches cold press paper, allowing layered textures and subtle tonal depth to emerge naturally through the process.
